EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - Since it’s launch more than 16 years ago, The American Red Cross Home Fire Campaign has installed more than 2.6 million free smoke alarms.
Retired 82-year-old teacher Jerry Kuykendall has volunteered with the American Red Cross for decades.
“It’s been wonderful. It’s actually been my main volunteer work for the last 10 years. I do other kind of things but my favorite thing is installing free smoke alarms for people,” Kuykendall said.
And that’s exactly what Kuykendall spent his Friday morning doing.
Over the last 10 years, he’s installed 970 free smoke alarms.
“It means almost everything. My father’s favorite thing to say to me was make yourself useful. That’s still inside me what Harry said all those years ago.”
Kuykendall says he’s volunteered during hurri
