COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - A federal court has sided with a South Carolina teenager challenging the legality of a state law dealing with which students can use which bathrooms at school.

The restriction was enacted last year as a proviso, or temporary law written into the state budget, which the General Assembly has kept in place since then.

It requires people to use school restrooms and locker rooms based on the gender on their birth certificate.

“What it’s targeting is appropriate policy for children in South Carolina, and appropriate policy for children in South Carolina is that boys go to the boys’ room and girls go to the girls’ room,” said Sen. Wes Climer, R–York, who introduced the proviso.
