BRYAN COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - Bryan County has made a sudden leadership change in its Fire & Emergency Services department.

Fire Chief Matthew C. Burns, who began his tenure in January 2025, has been “separated” from the department during his probationary period, officials confirmed.

Chief Burns, appointed on January 13, 2025, brought more than three decades of public safety experience to Bryan County, including service as a Battalion Chief in Fairfax County, Virginia.

However, just months into his tenure, Burns’ probationary period has ended abruptly with his separation.

Bryan County has not yet publicly disclosed the details behind the decision.

To fill the role, Anthony M. Van Es, III has stepped in as Interim Fire Chief.
