MADISON (WKOW) – The three finalists for Madison police chief faced the City of Madison's Board of Police and Fire Commission on Thursday. Milwaukee Assistant Police Chief Steven Johnson, Acting Madison Police Chief John Patterson and Madison Police Capt. Stephanie Drescher answered six questions focused on pressing policing issues, including cooperation with federal immigration enforcement.
"We don't have a role in immigration enforcement. That is the role of federal law enforcement, and we'll leave it up to them," said Johnson.
"There are very limited circumstances when we would consider immigration status; that is mainly when an individual is suspected of, or has committed, a serious crime in our community; something like a violent crime or terrorism or espionage," said Patterson.
