A black-and-white photo of men struggling to pull a lifeboat across the ice decorates a large wall inside XOverland Ranch’s headquarters, called the Roadhouse, north of Three Forks.

The men were crew members aboard the ship Endurance on the ill-fated Antarctic expedition led by Sir Ernest Shackleton in the early 1900s. The ship was trapped in ice and sank, temporarily stranding the crew until a miraculous ocean crossing in the ship’s three lifeboats led to the crew’s rescue.

For Clay Croft, the photo is a reminder that no matter what problems arise, there are usually solutions.

“If these men can figure out how to survive through a winter in Antarctica and work together pulling their lifeboat, we could probably figure anything out,” he said. “Everyone's got to be pulling the boat.”
