Both men who perished when a small plane crashed July 21 on the west side of the state were licensed pilots, according to a report of the incident.
The crash claimed Kevin Lawrence, 62, of Presque Isle, and Paul Shalk, 68, of Rogers City, authorities said. According to the National Transportation Safety Board's report, one of the men had built the plane, a two-person Vans RV-14, and the other was considering buying it.
According to the report, the pilot departed from the Alpena County Regional Airport in Alpena at 2:33 p.m. and arrived at the Oscoda/Wurtsmith Airport in Oscoda, where the passenger boarded, 23 minutes later.
