Thomas Armstrong, a lifelong Pittsburgh resident who helped reimagine Downtown and build up the North Side, died Aug. 3. He was 77.
As chairman of the Pittsburgh Planning Commission for 15 years and a member of the commission for 24 years, Mr. Armstrong oversaw projects that made the city more walkable and bike-friendly, renovated the riverfront and reshaped several blocks of the Golden Triangle.
“Tom Armstrong is one of those unsung heroes of Pittsburgh,” said Joseph Sabino Mistick, a friend, Duquesne University professor and once the executive secretary to former Pittsburgh Mayor Sophie Masloff.
Mr. Armstrong attended Fox Chapel Area High School and Washington & Jefferson College and received an MBA from Lehigh University.
