PAIA (HawaiiNewsNow) - A Maui Police Department officer died following a shooting in Paia Friday.

It happened near Baldwin Avenue near Heritage Hall.

Police shut down Baldwin Avenue to investigate the scene.

Police said the suspect has been taken into custody.

The department said in a statement, “This is a tragic loss for our department and our community. Out of respect for the officer’s family and loved ones, we are not releasing further details at this time.”
