FLORENCE CITY COUNCIL
The City of Florence may allow a smaller accessory dwelling unit to be built on the same site as a single-family residence in all the city's residentially zoned districts.
City officials say the change is needed because a lot of existing detached housing units in older neighborhoods are vacant and deteriorating due to the inability of property owners to rent the houses because of the city's current zoning code.
City officials specifically point to neighborhoods such as Timrod Park and Maple Park as having a number of carriage houses, garage apartments, granny flats and other detached housing units sitting vacant while affordable housing is at a premium.
The proposed amendment incorporates site standards and limits the use of ADUs to owner-occupied properties.
