BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - Civil Rights Activist Reverend Calvin Woods Sr. has passed away.
Woods family confirmed the news to WBRC shortly after his passing on Friday, August 15. Woods was 91.
Woods served as head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference until his retirement in 2022. That was a position he took over from his older brother, the Reverend Abraham Woods.
Both Calvin Woods and Abraham Woods were integral parts of the Birmingham Civil Rights Movement and also helped start the Alabama Christian Movement for human rights alongside Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth .
Over the decades, Calvin Woods was credited as an unmistakable and consistent voice, calling out racism and violence.
Woods family has also had an impact on Birmingham’s faith, political and cultural life
