BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - Many school districts across the state are working with limited staff and that includes the men and women who drive kids to school.

Jefferson County Schools Superintendent Dr. Walter Gonsoulin Jr. tells WBRC the bus driver shortage is a side effect of the pandemic.

“I can’t really contribute to the reason why that is occurring, but we have seen that trend since COVID,” Gonsoulin said.

At last check, the school district was down more than a dozen spots.

It is a tricky task when the district is managing some 500 bus routes daily.

“And this is totally, only at the last option that we have when we have to cancel a route,” Gonsoulin said.
