The Canton Police Department is investigating an incident in which authorities say a tree fell onto a road and struck two vehicles, fatally injuring one person.

According to Canton Police, at about 12:52 p.m. Friday, on Hickory Flat Highway near Interstate 575, two vehicles were traveling in opposite directions when a large tree limb unexpectedly fell onto the roadway.

Upon arrival, officers determined that the vehicles were not involved in a collision with each other, but the tree limb struck both vehicles.

The driver of a vehicle traveling eastbound was fatally injured. According to police, evidence suggested the person was killed instantly when the tree impacted their vehicle, which continued forward and struck a nearby light pole.
