PAIA, Hawaii (Island News) -- The Maui community is mourning the loss of Officer Suzanne O, a five-year veteran of the Maui Police Department, who was shot and killed while responding to a call in Paia.

Police said the officer was struck in the chest by gunfire near the old sugar mill on Baldwin Avenue late Friday night. The suspect was also wounded in the incident, shot in the hip by officers, and is now in custody. Their name has not yet been released.

Fellow officers describe O as selfless, hardworking and deeply committed to serving the community.

“I wish it didn’t happen, but I’m not surprised. That was the type of selfless person she was,” said State of Hawaii Organization of Police Officers Maui Chapter Chair Nick Krau.
