When I was 12 years old, my dream was to become a Major League Baseball player. My adolescent brain saw my selection for the West Akron travel team as evidence of my eventual success in the “Big Show.”

By high school, I’d discovered Led Zeppelin and Van Halen, abandoned baseball altogether, convinced my life would be spent touring in a rock band. Coming of age at Firestone High School , where the Black Keys and Chrissie Hynde went, I was confident in this prediction.

Of course, I didn’t end up becoming David Lee Roth, and I found myself at the University of Akron where I fell head over heels in love with government and electoral politics.
