TEXAS CITY, Texas (KIAH) -- Air quality monitoring is underway in Texas City after a reported "upset" led to higher the normal emissions of sulfur dioxide.
It happened Saturday night at the Valero facility on Loop 197. A city spokesperson said this is considered a level 3-A alert – just as precautionary measure. That means there could be impacts outside of the refinery.
According to EPA’s website, short time exposure to sulfur dioxide can harm a person’s respiratory system and make breathing difficult.
Again, the city said there’s no hazardous impact on the community and there’s also no need to shelter in place.
