Hundreds of registered nurses working for Legacy Mount Hood Medical Center in Gresham are poised to strike if they can’t reach a contract agreement with hospital executives, the Oregon Nurses Association announced on Saturday.

The 400 nurses have been bargaining with Legacy since December of 2023. They formed a union earlier that year, spurred on by public controversy over Legacy’s attempt to close Mount Hood’s birthing center, a move that was ultimately blocked by the Oregon Health Authority.

“Nurses say the fight underscored the need for a strong union voice in patient care decisions,” the Oregon Nurses Association said in a news release.

This group of nurses is just one of eleven Oregon Nurses Association bargaining units currently negotiating with Legacy as some 4,000 employees
