NEWBERRY COUNTY, S.C. — Newberry County deputies say a suspect is in custody after they say he fatally shot a woman along Interstate 26 Monday morning.

According to deputies, the shooting took a man shot a woman in a vehicle near Exit 82, which is the SC-773/Prosperity exit in Newberry County. Officers said he then ran across the interstate.

Deputies said after a short pursuit the suspect was arrested at the Mid-Carolina Country Club. Multiple law agencies responding, including the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, which is assisting in the investigation.

Newberry Sheriff Lee Foster said the campus of Mid-Carolina High School and Middle School as well as Prosperity Richard School were put on lockdown as a safety measure.
