Cruise lines are rerouting ships away from Hurricane Erin, which regained power after weakening over the weekend.

The Category 4 storm is expected to bring heavy rain to parts of Hispaniola on Monday, Aug. 18 and to the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos through Tuesday, Aug. 19. "Erin is expected to produce life-threatening surf and rip currents along the beaches of the Bahamas, much of the east coast of the U.S., Bermuda, and Atlantic Canada during the next several days," an Aug. 18 advisory from the National Hurricane Center said.

Turks and Caicos and the southeast Bahamas will likely see tropical storm conditions Monday, while parts of the central Bahamas could see similar weather late Monday and into Tuesday. Here’s how cruise lines are working to avoid the storm.

Carnival, Norwegian and more reroute ships

  • Carnival Cruise Line: Carnival Sunshine scrapped a planned two-day visit to Bermuda on Aug. 20 and 21, replacing it with stops in its private Bahamas destination Celebration Key on Aug. 19 and Nassau on Aug. 20. The ship, which is sailing a six-day cruise, will return to Norfolk, Virginia as scheduled on Aug. 23."Safety is our priority, and we will continue to track the storm, factor in guidance from the National Hurricane Center, U.S. Coast Guard and local port authorities to provide timely updates," the cruise line told USA TODAY in an emailed statement. "Guests on upcoming sailings are encouraged to opt in to text alerts during check-in and monitor their email for potential updates from Carnival."
  • Norwegian Cruise Line: Norwegian Aqua canceled an Aug. 20 visit to Bermuda during its current four-day cruise, and will stop in Saint John in New Brunswick, Canada instead, according to the cruise line. Norwegian Jewel, which is sailing a week-long cruise, will also leave Bermuda on Aug. 18, a day earlier than planned. The ship will spend Aug. 19 at sea."The safety and security of our guests, crew and the communities we visit remain a top priority," Norwegian said in an emailed statement.
  • Disney Cruise Line: Disney Treasure replaced stops in Tortola in the British Virgin Islands and St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands with visits to Cozumel, Mexico; George Town on Grand Cayman; and Falmouth, Jamaica during its week-long Aug. 16 cruise, according to the cruise line. The ship will stop in the line’s Bahamas private island, Castaway Cay, as planned on Aug. 22.
  • MSC Cruises: MSC World America will stop in Costa Maya and Cozumel, Mexico rather than Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic and San Juan, Puerto Rico during its current voyage, according to the cruise line. The ship departed for a week-long sailing from Miami on Aug. 16."We will still proceed to Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve (on Aug. 22) as originally scheduled," MSC added in an email.
