A man accused in the slaying of a transgender woman this summer in Detroit has been charged, officials said.
Malique Javon Fails, 18, was arraigned Monday in 36th District Court in Detroit, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said.
The Highland Park resident is charged with murder, larceny from a person, and hate crime – gender identity bias, the office said.
A magistrate remanded the defendant to jail and scheduled his probable cause conference for Aug. 26, according to authorities. A preliminary examination follows on Sept. 2.
If convicted, Fails faces up to life in prison for the murder charge.
Court records did not list a lawyer for Fails on Monday, but said he has requested a court-appointed attorney.
Detroit police were called at about 3 p.m. on June 21 to a laundromat in the
