ST. LOUIS — A St. Louis man on Monday was sentenced to prison for molesting a young girl then opening fire on a group of men who confronted him about it.
Joel Chaney was sentenced to 12 years in prison after admitting to charges that he molested an 11-year-old girl and then opened fire on on three men in the city's Clinton Peabody housing project on Chouteau Avenue.
The girl's relatives, who are not being identified by the Post-Dispatch to protect the identity of a victim of sexual assault, said they did not think 12 years was enough prison time.
The girl was traumatized, they said. One of the people he shot was in a wheelchair.
"He's a real monster," the girl's mother said.
Chaney did not speak in court.
