On Monday at 2:59 p.m. the National Weather Service released a rip current statement valid from Tuesday 6 a.m. until Wednesday 9 p.m. for Brooklyn and Suffolk County.
"Dangerous rip currents expected," states the weather service. "A high rip current risk is forecast for Tuesday as the swell from Hurricane Erin increases. Longer term, life- threatening surf and rip currents expected for the rest of this week as building long period swells from Erin continue, peaking on Thu/Fri."
"Life-threatening rip currents are likely for all people entering the surf zone. Anyone visiting the beaches should stay out of the surf. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water," describes the weather service. "If you enter the surf zone, always have a flotation device with
