GATLINBURG, Tenn. (WVLT) - After community input, the City of Gatlinburg has decided to continue adding fluoride to its water. The additive is widely added to water to improve oral health, but it is also the focus of a bit of controversy over claims it could have adverse health effects.
The city said in a Monday announcement that it had received public input, as well as advice from health and dental professionals, deciding to continue the practice.
“We believe that maintaining fluoride in the water system is in the best interest of our citizens,“ city representatives said. ”Fluoridation remains a safe, effective, and equitable public health practice that helps promote better oral health outcomes across all age groups."
