NEW ORLEANS —

The New Orleans mayor became the 27th public official in Metro New Orleans to be indicted by the Department of Justice since the year 2000.

Mayor LaToya Cantrell was indicted Friday and is facing 11 felony counts, including conspiracy, wire fraud, conspiracy to obstruct justice, false statements, obstruction of justice and false declaration before a grand jury. Advertisement

Cantrell is the first sitting mayor to be indicted, amid a broader history of corruption charges against New Orleans officials.

Former Mayor Ray Nagin was charged in 2013 after leaving office and was convicted of numerous bribery-related crimes.
