COLUMBUS, Ohio — Gov. Mike DeWine on Monday defended his decision to send 150 Ohio National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., as part of President Donald Trump’s attempted takeover of police in the nation’s capital, saying it’s in line with past Guard deployments.

DeWine, in an interview Monday, declined to say what his personal opinion is of Trump’s controversial attempt to militarize law enforcement in Washington, which the president has justified on the false claim that it was “the most unsafe city in the United States, and perhaps the world.”

However, DeWine said he “always defers” to other leaders when they ask Ohio for National Guard troops, and he won’t change that policy now.
