Jill Grandfield still remembers the smiles hidden by masks when she dropped her daughter off on the first day of kindergarten in 2020.

Now, five years later, it was impossible to miss the smile on her boy's face. Hartley Grandfield, 5, was among the thousands of Washoe County School District students who started kindergarten on Monday.

While most students in Washoe County returned to classes last week, its youngest students -- the Class of 2038 -- started Monday.
