AVALON — With high winds and a high tide driving waves into the roadway Monday afternoon, police closed the Townsends Inlet Bridge connecting the community with Sea Isle City to the north.

“It’s not a bridge issue,” said Avalon Borough Administrator Scott Wahl. “It’s waves washing onto the roadway, which is Ocean Drive. It happens quite often when there are northeasterly winds and a high tide.”

The bridge access closed a little after 2 p.m., and Wahl expected it to reopen after the tide recedes.

Multiple agencies along the South Jersey coast this week warned of potentially dangerous currents, based on a warning from the National Weather Service, which said ocean currents in Atlantic and Cape May counties could be dangerous.
