GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Back-to-school means backpacks, new teachers, and for many families, a big question mark about what’s on the lunch tray.
Michigan’s free school meals program is funded only through the end of September, and lawmakers in Lansing still haven’t passed a school aid budget for this school year.
“One thing that kids should not have to worry about is where their healthy meals are coming from,” said Vice President of Programming at Kids' Food Basket, Austin Roelofs.
For the past two years, Michigan public school students have had free breakfast and lunch for all students, regardless of income. However, with the state’s school aid budget undecided, the program could end after Sept. 30, leaving families anxious and Kids’ Food Basket trying to help.
