BALTIMORE —

Two Maryland sisters were born 15 years apart, but they've always been close. Now, their bond is even stronger after a selfless gift of life.

The live kidney donation happened April 1 to honor the anniversary of their father's death, and his belief that family always comes first.

Lisa Carchedi is the baby — the youngest of five. She isn't just Gina Warsaw's little sister, she's a lifesaver.

"My mom's 96, so she said, 'I knew I had a fifth child for a reason, to save my second child's life," Warsaw said.

Out of nowhere, Warsaw was diagnosed with end-stage kidney failure. She endured nearly two years of dialysis, but ultimately needed a transplant.

When Carchedi found out she was a donor match, that's all she needed to hear.
