COLUMBIA, Mo. – Paying a visit to a popular cave network in mid-Missouri is a fun and free way to stay cool during August’s heat.
Devil’s Icebox is one of 12 caves underneath the more than 2,000 acres that make up Rock Bridge Memorial State Park in Boone County. At a temperature of 55 degrees, the cool air can be felt seeping out of the cave’s crevices.
At roughly 6.5 miles, the Devil’s Icebox is one of the longest caves in Missouri. Another cave, Connor’s Cave, is accessed by the eight trails that weave in and around the park’s grounds.
An impressive part of the cave system is a natural rock bridge that you can explore from underneath.
“It’s peaceful, quiet, not a lot of people, cool,” said Bernie Baker, a Columbia resident. “And it's a hot day and it's a nice time to be in the shade
