ST. PAUL — A Ramsey County judge has struck down a law banning binary triggers in Minnesota.

On Monday, Aug. 18, Ramsey County Judge Leonardo Castro sided with the Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus in a lawsuit that said the inclusion of the ban in a 1,400-page bill violates the Minnesota Constitution’s prohibition of bills that address more than a single subject.

A binary trigger is a device added to a gun that allows a firearm to fire one round when a trigger is pulled and a second round on the release of the trigger.

The ban on binary triggers, which went into effect on Jan. 1, was part of the 2024 omnibus tax bill. The ban was added to the massive bill in the final hours of the 2024 legislative session.
