A 23-year-old Birmingham man is facing a dozen charges, most of them for calls to 911 to report crimes or tragedies that had not happened.

The hoax calls included the suspect saying he was watching an escaped armed capital murder suspect that was actively sought by police.

He also called to say someone had shot at a Midfield police officer, and that a car had crashed into a home which was engulfed in flames with people trapped inside.

De’Sean Jyrell Brooks is charged with nine counts of swatting, two counts of impersonating a police officer, and one count of false reporting to law enforcement, according to court records made public Monday.

Brooks was booked into the Jefferson County Jail on Aug. 13. He remains held on bonds totaling $145,000.
