If you’ve ever been stuck on the tarmac waiting for a gate to open up at O'Hare Airport, there is some relief coming.

Construction began Monday on a new concourse.

Groundbreaking of the $1.3 billion Concourse D project, just south of Terminal 1, follows the busiest June in airport history and several record summer travel days. The satellite concourse, consisting of 19 new gates, will be under construction until late 2028.

“Airport planning is not just about the next year - it’s about the next generation," Michael McMurray, the commissioner of the Chicago Department of Aviation, said.
