A suburban high school student was shot and killed by a friend during a contest over who could assemble a handgun the fastest, the Kane County State's Attorney's Office confirmed.

The 17-year-old died Saturday night after being shot at a home along High Avenue near South State Street in Hampshire. Officers were called about a shooting at around 11:30 p.m. and found the teen who had been shot.

A Daily Herald report said family identified the victim as Deegan Kirschke, 17, a senior at Hampshire High School. In the report, Kirschke's uncle said the teen was a wrestler and motor sports enthusiast. As of Monday, police have not confirmed the name of the victim.
