WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - On August 18, 2005, 20 years ago, a Sedgwick County judge sentenced Dennis Rader, known as the BTK serial killer, to 10 consecutive life terms. This sentence accounted for each murder Rader committed, starting with the Otero family in Wichita in January 1974.

Rader terrorized the Wichita community for decades until 1991. He later resurfaced with a note that ultimately led to his arrest in February 2005.

Rader received the maximum prison sentence, ensuring that he would not be released from prison, as Kansas did not have the death penalty at the time the crimes were committed. Rader will have to serve a minimum of 175 years before being eligible for parole.
