MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Reviled by environmentalists and lauded by Memphis city officials, artificial intelligence company xAI is turning into a focal point for the city’s future. On Monday, FOX13 Investigates took a first-ever tour of the Colossus I supercomputer on Riverport Road.

The tour date turned out to be fortuitous to explain one major point of contention over the supercomputer. Severe Weather Center 13 tracked a high temperature of 100 degrees. For xAI, it was a ‘demand response day.’ That means it unplugs from TVA power to conserve electricity for families. On these days, xAI relies on power from its natural gas turbines and Tesla megapack batteries.
