HAMMOND, Ind. (WLS) -- People in Whiting, Indiana are dealing with street and basement flooding because of the rain Monday night and Tuesday morning.

They also say there is a foul odor in the air because of an issue at the BP refinery.

The company said it was hit with operational problems during the storms.

Road conditions have improved after parts of northwest Indiana were hit hard by storms.

In Whiting, 121st Street is closed to traffic between Schrage Avenue and Front Street because of an oil sheen on the road.

The BP Whiting Refinery says operations were impacted by the storms, leading to flooding and severe conditions in the surrounding neighborhoods.
