BLACK BEACH, MINN. - Four girls whose paddleboarding adventure in Lake Superior went horribly wrong were stranded for hours on a rocky island near the Minnesota shoreline this weekend before they were rescued by a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crew from Air Station Traverse City.

The sisters - ages 8 to 14 - had been paddleboarding in the big lake on Saturday in the vicinity of Black Beach in Silver Bay when they reached the smaller of two islands in that area.

The girls’ parent called emergency dispatchers around 8 p.m. to report their daughters were stuck and could not get off the island.
