(Sturgis, SD) — Sturgis sees a big surge in traffic over this year’s milestone Motorcycle Rally. The South Dakota Department of Transportation reports more than 537-thousand vehicles entered the city during the ten-day event — up over 11-percent from the five-year average. And counting walk-ins, public transit, and returning riders, total visits hit more than 661-thousand, topping last year’s numbers. Officials track traffic with nine counters placed around the city, though they note the numbers reflect crossings and not individual people.
