NEW YORK (WABC) -- Hurricane Erin is forcing evacuations on North Carolina's Outer Banks as it threatens to whip up wild waves and tropical force winds.
Erin had lost some strength from previous days but was still a Category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph (165 kph), the National Hurricane Center in Miami said. It was about 660 miles (1,050 kilometers) southwest of Bermuda and 690 miles (1,105 kilometers) south-southeast of Cape Hatteras and was moving northwest at 9 mph (15 kph).
Tropical storm warnings are posted for the Outer Banks in North Carolina, where wind gusts may exceed 40 mph. There is also a storm surge warning as well as these waves and the motion of Erin will lead to a storm surge of 2-4 feet.
