A 13-year-old was killed in a crash Tuesday after Marblehead police say a 16-year-old was driving under the influence.

At around 2:51 a.m. Tuesday, a car crashed near 352 Atlantic Ave., Essex County District Attorney Paul F. Tucker and Marblehead Police Chief Dennis King said.

A 13-year-old girl had life-threatening injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. A 16-year-old boy, believed to be the driver, was treated for his injuries and taken by ambulance to the hospital.

The boy was later arrested and charged with operating under the influence.

The crash remains under investigation by the Marblehead Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section (CARS), and State Police Crime Scene Services.
