DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — JASON SCHAAL, 43, of Riverhead, was sentenced to nine years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree attempted murder for a 2023 attack in which he steered a Toyota Prius onto the sidewalk at Willoughby and Jay Streets, struck a 38-year-old woman, then rammed an MTA bus at Boerum Place and Livingston Street, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced Friday. Civilians and court officers from nearby Brooklyn Criminal Court apprehended him; officials said Schaal admitted he intended to hit the victim and “flip” the bus. The pedestrian suffered head lacerations; the bus driver reported neck and back pain.

Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Jane Tully imposed the sentence; Gonzalez called it a “chilling, premeditated attack.”
