SCARBOROUGH, Maine — Lifeguards across southern Maine are getting ready for a dangerous stretch of beach weather as Hurricane Erin pushes powerful surf and rip currents toward the region.
Scarborough Beach State Park's manager Greg Wilfert said they may limit beach access or even close the beach altogether depending on how bad conditions get. The move comes after eight rescues were made in a single day last week, giving park staff a preview of what may be coming.
Models are showing waves as high as about 10 feet will reach the Gulf of Maine starting Thursday night. The largest waves are anticipated on Saturday before it clears out on Monday.
"The rip currents here are bad enough when the surf is one to three feet, let alone that big," Wilfert said.
