BANGOR -- The Asian Longhorn Tick was initially found in New Jersey back in 2017, which was the first occurrence in the United States.
Recently, the University of Maine Tick Lab received a submission from Cumberland County, marking the first time it’s been spotted in the state.
According to the director of the UMaine Tick Lab, it is widespread across 20 states, mostly in the eastern part of the country.
“The Asian longhorn tick is relatively unique in that it’s able to reproduce without mating. So, they can really build up their population quickly, even in relatively short amounts of time and small geographic areas," says Griffin Dill, Director of the Cooperative Extension Tick Lab.
