Michigan is hurtling toward a government shutdown that threatens lives, classrooms and care. Without decisive action from state lawmakers, hundreds of thousands of Michiganians could lose health coverage. Federal cuts are on the horizon, and unless lawmakers in Lansing pass a budget that closes that funding gap and prioritizes patients and workers, residents will suffer.

The state budget was due July 1. Lawmakers blew past that deadline, and if they don’t reach a deal by October 1, the state government will go dark. This would be catastrophic in any year, but this year also brings looming federal cuts to Medicaid and SNAP funding. These cuts have not taken effect yet, but they have already blown a hole in the state budget.
