JACKSON, MI – Jackson Public Schools is considering adding two more electric school buses to its fleet that will be funded primarily through a state grant.

JPS was awarded a grant from the Michigan Department of Education in October 2024 to purchase up to four more electric school buses with the state funding 90% of the purchase.

Officials decided to pursue purchasing two new EV buses following a finance and facility meeting on Aug. 7.

The decision was based on the current lot space available to store and charge the new buses, said Marcus Leon, assistant superintendent of finance and operations.

If approved, the total cost for the school district is estimated to be $82,635.70, though that amount is subject to change after further discussions with Highland Electric Fleets, Leon said.
