LOUISVILLE, Ky. —
Former University of Kentucky football standout Dean Wells was honored Monday by the Greater Louisville UK Alumni Club with its All-American Award.
Earlier this year, Wells lost a two-year, hard-fought battle with leukemia at the age of 54. The award was presented to his wife, Lisa, and their two sons Jack and Luke.
The Louisville Holy Cross star went on to set defensive records at UK before heading to the NFL. He holds the UK record for most sacks in a single game, recording five against Indiana in 1992.
Wells spent five years with the Seattle Seahawks and three with the Carolina Panthers before retiring and moving home to Louisville.
He was a passionate Kentucky fan, and after his NFL retirement, transitioned into coaching where he impacted many young athletes.
