LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A scammer is posing as a Lincoln Police sergeant, officials said Tuesday.
On Monday, a Lincoln woman was called by someone claiming to be “Sgt. Alton” or “Sgt. Aldon,” who told her that she had to pay for an ankle monitor program for someone in jail.
So the woman sent $500 through CashApp, according to police.
The scammer called back and tried to pressure her to send more money, but she refused.
The Lincoln Police Department said it does not have a Sgt. Alton or Aldon.
LPD also said it will never ask you for money.
If you receive a call from someone claiming to be an officer, ask for their name, their badge number and a case number.
You can then call LPD at 402-441-6000 to verify their identity.
