CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) -- A Champaign organ donor advocate said there are thousands of others in the position he was just 15 years ago -- waiting for the perfect match to help regain quality of life. With so many needing help, people are urging everyone to look into becoming an organ donor -- and possibly someone's hero.

Jim McFarlin got a kidney donation in 2011. He said his donor was a 6-year-old girl -- whose family allowed her death to bring life for McFarlin. Researchers say on average, an organ donor helps half a dozen people or more. From livers, lungs and more, they all can bring new hope for people waiting to get treatment. August is National Minority Donor Awareness Month -- and McFarlin said people of color can face unique challenges when it comes to donation.
