A former scout leader who pressured a 14-year-old to be his girlfriend in a bid to have sex with her has been sentenced.

Michael Harper, 21, first struck up conversation with the then-14-year-old when he was 17, just after he had added the girl as a friend on Instagram, a court heard.

Mr Harper and the 14-year-old later kissed, before he "suggested to her that they had sex," but the teenage girl said she did not want to have intercourse with someone she was not in a relationship with.

It was heard that a week after this had occurred, the former scout leader asked the teenager to be his girlfriend, but "the sad reality was that, other than meeting for sex, there was no relationship between (them)," Judge David Knifton said.
