WAITE PARK, Minn. — Thanks to a quick-thinking friend and a nearby automated external defibrillator, an Avon, Minnesota, man was saved after he collapsed on a pickleball court July 31.

Mike Collins was playing pickleball at River's Edge Park in Waite Park, Minnesota, with his friend, 64-year-old Steve Roforth. They were taking a break between and talking between games when Collins became unresponsive.

“I looked at him, and I could tell something wasn’t quite right,” Roforth told St. Cloud LIVE during a phone call on Monday, Aug. 11.

Collins' face turned red, then blue, and Roforth realized he wasn’t breathing, he said. Roforth called out to the dozens of people nearby, asking someone to call 911. Collins, an octogenarian, was going into cardiac arrest.
